Podcast Episode 25

Staying small on purpose

Guest

Angie Herrera

Duration

41:09

Angie Herrera started Block 81 in 2003 because no agency jobs were available in Portland that year. She told her partner she would try freelancing for a few months and get a real job if it did not work out. Twenty-three years later, she is still the whole company.

We talk about how a graphic design graduate ended up writing Twig templates, why ExpressionEngine made her a better developer, and what finally made Craft stick in version two. Angie explains why she keeps third-party plugins to a minimum, what she actually lets content editors touch, and why she enjoys the part of a build that plenty of developers would rather skip.

The second half gets into the business. Angie is honest about how rough the past few years have been, about not enjoying sales, and about the moment she decided she did not want to manage people. We also talk about AI: where she lets it do the tedious work, where she would rather hire a backend developer, and why she thinks the human side is what will set small studios apart.
